I’ve finally been to my first berry patch. Despite the scorching Texas heat, I loved it. Martin’s Berry Patch is located in a town nearby us, Hallsville, TX. He primarily has A LOT of blackberries, and about a fourth of his berry patch is blueberries. We stuck with the blackberries, and we came out with a bucket full. By the way, this is a GREAT place to bring kids.
DIRECTIONS: It is located in Hallsville off FM 968 just NORTH of I-20. (When we were looking for it the only directions I found online said it was south of I-20. But it is actually about 5 miles or so North of I-20). He is open Monday through Saturday from 7am to 7pm.
Being new to this whole fresh berry picking thing…has anyone ever seen those little white bugs that live on the blackberries? I discovered them today, made my stomach turn a few times. From what I could find, the best way to get rid of them is to rinse, then put in the freezer for 5-10 minutes then rinse again. Seemed to do the trick, still….I don’t like those little things. Apparently it is just part of getting fresh berries.
I know I’ve promised you all a new recipe. I’ve made it, I’ve photographed it and they are all gone to us and people around town. Just need to put it together, you will want to make them. I have nicknamed them heaven and hell brownies. The recipe will be posted by Tuesday, I promise. For real.
Allow me to walk you through the experience at Martin Berry Patch. (Picture heavy) When you arrive, you are handed a bucket and told the lay of the land.
I was so excited that there were some of my favorite flowers growing on his fence- passion flowers. Aren’t they pretty?
Lots and lots of berries.
Yum! Granted, if I would have seen the little bitty white bugs crawling on these, I wouldn’t have been trying them off the vine. Oh well.
Doug was a berry picking fool.
Make sure you watch out for all these giant buzzing bumble bees around all the pretty flowers out there.
When you are all done, you go check out with the owner, Mr. Martin. Super nice guy. Really should support local farmers like him.
And say hello to this little girl. She was displaced during Hurricane Katrina, ended up in the pound…then at the berry patch. Sweet pup.
If you are around East Texas ever I suggest checking out a berry patch. There are a bunch out there. If you want more information about this one, let me know! Hope everyone had a great weekend! Leave me some comment love!
